Iranian citizens blog their way to the summit

Angry Web users from Iran have been bombarding a weblog run by the World Summit on the Information Society, in an attempt to fight government censorship.

The Iranian government has imposed tight controls on Internet access. Critics say that more than 10,000 political and pornographic sites are officially blocked, and last week the Google cache - a common way of circumventing censorship - was added to the list.

Since the restrictions on Google were discovered, hundreds of Iranian Internet users have used the opportunity of the UN summit to protest against the censorship.

By posting messages on www.dailysummit.blog, they hope to get the attention of global leaders attending the summit and put public pressure on their government in Tehran.

The Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has already spoken at the summit in Geneva, declaring a "commitment to ethical values, human rights and principles of democracy" is key to a knowledge-based society.

Khatami has defended himself against the blogs, claiming that Iran only blocks access to 240 "pornographic and immoral" sites that are incompatible with Islam.

He told journalists at the summit that, "freedom of expression and freedom of thought are the preconditions of a democratic society. But freedom does not mean chaos".
